844 On The Chester Subdivision
Author: MaryMcPherson

Here are highlights from our filming yesterday when we chased 844 from just north of Fults to just south of Scott City on the Chester Subdivision.  It's great to be able to shoot steam on our "home turf!"

1.  North of Fults
2.  Just north of Fults
3.  Near Modoc
4.  Kaskaskia River
5.  Chester yard
6.  North of Rockwood
7.  Near Grand Tower with Inspiration Point in the background
8.  Big Muddy River north levy
9.  Just south of Potts
10.  North of Reynoldsville
11.  South of Scott City

That's about 120 miles of railroad in 5 and-a-half minutes.  Enjoy!

Framing of foreground and background is excellent.
Any idea what speed was in beginning scenes? My guess ~60mph.

Great video Mary, Question . Does anyone know why U P is running 844 with a 5 car train all over the place ?   Is this a trial run after the rebuild to make sure everything is working as it should or is this just to let the public know the old girl is back on the rails or is it both? Whatever she looks and sounds as good as ever.

DL stole the locomotive, snuck it out of Cheyenne and made a run for it, trying to see how far he can get before the UP brass catches him. If it wasn't for all of us railfans keeping track of it, no one would know where he was by now.

Nice video.  The rod noise is disturbing in places and he should tear down the running gear in Memphis and fix that.

I agree. Especially with such light throttle, i.e. what's with all the knocking? Those guys have had the drivers out some many times, it tends to make one wonder. Especially after the current manager didn't like the "rod noise" back in the early 2000s, so as soon as he was in charge, he tightened up all the rod clearances. That sure bit him in the ass the first outing of 2011!

Noise is due to the old drunks, I am sure :)- sarcasm

I sure do love that shot between Scott City and Rockview.  Makes me miss home big time.  I'm hoping somebody shot her with a cotton field south of Dexter on the way to Memphis.  A steam engine stepping past bolled out cotton (*ON the Cotton Belt Route*) isn't exactly an every-day photo op.

Great series of runbys - thanks for sharing them!

BTW - What's the running speed for UP #844 at it's fastest point along the route to Memphis?

How do they go about operating on another railroads tracks?  Pilot crews, fees for the use of tracks?

I bet she never cracked 60 mph the entire trip......anyone seen any blow downs?

Heard it hit the detector at mile 117 south of McClure at 61mph.  At that point they were making up lost time after getting run around by a Z train.  My guess is that is the reason for the schedule calling for about a 40 mph average, as they were keeping pretty close to schedule even with delays.

Look at Tuesday's offerings for evidences of blowdowns.
