8444 on her way home
Author: A-1

My father snapped this picture sometime in the 70's(maybe someone here knows exactly when?). That E unit that came within a split second of ruining his shot helped bump the 800s from the high profile assignments. It's probably long gone now but the tracks it's on remain. The tracks 8444 is on here are long gone, but she ran today.

The "E" unit appears to be the 928 which was at the Durham Museum in Omaha for a while and is now rusting away in Cheyenne.

I think this photo was taken when 8444 visited Portland in the second half of the 1960s. It's a meet at Bonneville siding with #105 on the main and the steam special in the hole.

By the way, 8444 is not on its way home yet in this photo as the steam special will return to Portland before the end of the day. When it left town heading back towards Cheyenne that year, it was ahead of ABA F units on a freight train.

Best regards,

Rob L.
