Steam and rural towns

Pictures of steam engines are associated with rural communities in a lot of photos.  Here for example is Hallsville, Texas in the late 1930's.  The scene is complete with a dirt road, pole lines,  a crossbuck, a ramshackle building,  all indicative of a small town, and a steam locomotive...  In this case Texas & Pacific class I-1cr 2-10-4 # 646 apparently waiting for either a meet or a switchman to give it a signal since there is no smoke.  While still, the sheer size of the steal giant along with its panting noises captured the attention of people when around them. .

I see a wigwag on the far side of the crossing. Nice picture!
