Another Photo of a Gold CB&Q 5632
Author: MartyBernard

To celebrate the centennial of the opening of its Chicago to Aurora, Illinois line, the Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy (very) temporarily painted its king of fan trips, Northern 5632, gold, seen here in Aurora on May 24, 1964.

Enjoy,

If someone knows, what's up with that searchlight signal mounting?  Very interesting.

I believe that aspect would be per CB&Q Rule 501-J, Lunar over Red, explained by Rule 509A, "When a train is stopped by a Stop-and-Proceed indication, it may proceed at once at restricted Speed, not exceeding 15 miles per hour, expecting to find a train in the block, broken rail, obstruction or switch not properly lined"

I believe the searchlight signal facing the train but mounted to the left of the track it is governing is controlling the lead switch into the suburban station tracks in Aurora, IL. Mounting it there would save building a signal bridge just for that signal, although the CB&Q was known to do that very thing in other locations. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will offer the correct explanation.

That signal was for switch #25 off the south main
into the east end of the back lead at Aurora depot.

I remember when they did that to the 5632.   It reminded me of the HO scale, unpainted, brass models my dad would buy, and sneak home and hide so my mother didn't find out about them.  He'd save for months to get some of them.   They are still beautiful pieces of modeling art.

Many, many years ago, my younger brother and I would listen to an album of steam locomotive sounds on which was the quote,"the 6315 and the 5632 coupled west with no orders". Now that I'm older I can't remember the name of that album. Is anyone else familiar enough to know the title?

I belive it was "Sunday Only".  The quote was the operator at Mendota, IL.
