Originally named Coburn Station after a saloon keeper, the town we no know as Truckee, began it's life with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad in the 1860's.  As the railroad  was completed and grew so did the town of Truckee.

In this fine 1920's view of the East end of Truckee with the giant enclosed Southern Pacific Roundhouse, we see the rail facilities dominating the scene.  The ever present winter snows have dictated not only the covered roundhouse but also the sheds built over the tracks to keep the trains out of the winter snow storms.

Railroad towns come and go with the fortune of the lines they were built to serve.  Truckee has proven it's ability to stay and thrive due in large part to it's important location on the still vibrant transcontinental railroad.

Thanks, Martin.  Very interesting photo.  Could that be the Hobart Estate/Hobart Southern right of way heading off to the right behind the roundhouse?

That most diefinately is the Hobart Southern heading north to Hobart Mills.  Here is a view of Hobart Southern #4 taking on water with Truckee in the background in April 1939 by Guy L. Duscomb.

My sister-in-law lived in Truckee in the 1990s and early 2000s. She lived in the house in the circle. Great place to railfan. I would sit on her front porch and watch the trains while my wife visited with her sister. Little has changed in that neighborhood since the 1920s.

Except for the wimpy mountains ... my first reaction to seeing this picture was that it might be Avery, ID.  The same forces of nature forged both towns, and the railroads reacted similiarly.

In the 1939 photo the roof is off the roundhouse.  Did they remove the roof once snow season was over or is it being dismantled in that photo?

They dismantled the roundhouse all together.
