SP 2482 Ferrying PA 6038
Author: Barstool

The date is June 1st. 1952, and P-10 2482 is in charge of train 55, heading west out of martinez.....today, Train 55 is ferrying PA 6038 to Oakland to be set up for service...SP sent a large number pf PA's on train 55 as they came thru El lPaso to L.A. and then on train 55.....But the interesting story is about 2482.....This engine for what ever reason cout match a 4300 in starting and pulling power and was used many times in freight service....The shops in Sacramento one day, and Im not sure when....Took 2482 apart to try and figure out why a Pacific could match a 4300 pound for pound, but it looks like there were no answers...I saw the 2482 on the Suisun turn several times and never got a helper out of Port Costa for the climb to the bridge.  The Suisun turn for years always drew a F-1 3618 for road power for one and always double headed with the 2-8-0 running behind the 3618...they would cut the helper off at the east end of the bridge and she would head back to Port Costa.

Perhaps the 2482 was assigned 300-lb+ engineers and firemen for the added tractive effort. (I know. I know.)

The answer is siimple:  the skyline faring added to this beautiful Pacific made it FEEL like a 4300, which also had such skyline faring.  You see, it's all in the mind.  The Pacific believed it had the power, and it did!!

Jim Baker.....All the Pa's that were ferried on Train 55were doubleheaded, only the B units were DIT and there were a number of single b units as time went by....There was a bulletin that was sent to all stations that had  Train Masters as home base and at the time it was c.e. Naperwho recieved this notice on the 2482 as well as the movement of the 4367 to Eugene ore. and many other bulletins...

Guys...With all the comments on the 2482, I think that if we all combined I thoughts, we could turn ther 2482 into a super pacific.
