UP steam fixers
Author: dcfbalcoS1

Anybody like to guess how many years in the future it will be before we know what company or group of individuals were paid by the U.P. to go in and repair the 844 and I assume are doing the same for the 4014 in order to get it out and running ??        Not asking who, just how many years.

Look back to see your answers as UP is doing the job and did the job on 844. Its been posted all during the rebuild and ongoing rebuild of 4014.

No they didn't, outside help came in and finished the job

Not hardly. Not a single person on that crew had any experience whatsoever in locomotive boiler work. Which explains how the boiler got into the shape it was in.

They used contractors for virtually all of the boiler and firebox work, installation of lagging, and all the wiring and electrical work.

The same week in May 2014 both 4014 arrived in Cheyenne (5/8/14) and WMSR announced (5/6/14) they would be restoring 1309.

1309 to be ready late spring with official debut of July 1st.

That's what we are supposed to believe, anyway.

I think the OP was hoping for some Wikileaks type event, hoping to take credit for starting a truth-finding scandal. UP Steam isn't that important anymore in overall scheme of things, so no one's going to "leak" any meaningful information, anyway.

Hope people are making plans to see some real mainline steam actions this year, including the 611 and the 4449.

No 'wikileaks' type scenario here. I asked a straight up question of 'how many years it will be be'. That is asking for an opinion from whoever, nothing more.

That will never be revealed. In fact, they might deny any "outside" workers were involved at all.

A HotWater-ish Q&A would have been good enough for me:

Q: "Does anyone know if UP Steam used outside contractor to repair the UP 844 in time to meet the Cheyenne Frontier Days deadline?"
HotWater: "Yes."

Some outside 'people' did the work and eventually someone will tell someone else. Americans can't keep a secret to save their lives even with corporate axe men threatening them. The French Resistance had a pretty good method of keeping things quiet but not here. I give it no more than 5 years and at the most 10.
We will all meet back here when things have fallen apart and someone blabbed.

Is it that big of a secret?  How many people are out there who are qualified in that field that the knowledgeable people here would not know them?  I'm sure there are plenty of people who can do general boiler work but how transferrable are those skills to locomotive work?

They got a regular general boiler shop from Colorado
to do the boiler work. It should have been (and probably
was) an ASME/NBIC code shop with the proper stamps
and credentials and access to both of those codes and
to FRA Part 230.

They were also told to keep quiet about it.

General boiler shops often deal with boilers and other
appliances in power plants, refineries and chemical plants;
sometimes up to 1,800 psi or more.  A 300 psi locomotive
boiler is child's play to them AS LONG AS they follow the
proper codes.

There was some fool on here a few years ago braying
about the crew having ship boiler experience and how
much better that would be that plain old locomotive folk.

This was ridiculous on it's face, as ship boilers are entirely
different from locomotive boilers in design, constuction,
maintenance and operation.  Plus none of these guys had
ever been on a marine boiler crew.  Probably only one of
them had ever even been in a ship's fire room.
