SP4460 WB on the Bridge at martinez
Author: Barstool

Its Nov. 19 1955 and steam is still champ on the Western Division...In this shot the only GS-6 to be saved was the 4460 who is handling this west bound with ease..She's whipped the WB grade to the bridge and is just gliding along....When you listen to the dispatcher on the phone system, you here what they think of the various locomotives, and the GS2/3/4/5 and 6's always got high praise...They did not use a lot of water and it was not uncommon to by pass port costa for a refill unless they had a set out.....

I know it will be hersey to say, but I think the GS6's were the SP's most elegant locomotives.
Thanks for posting this view.

The GS-6's made the western division ther home, but they also worked 19/20 and before the Cascade, the Beaver...Of this group, the 4462 was caught in a rock slide in Oregon and was too far gone to repair and wsas the first GS-6 tobe scrapped...

JBWEST........B&W is good, but color is far better, at least the 4460 went out with a bang...4460 was one of those engines, like the 4367 that was a good performer,I was down by the depot in Martinez when she went thru...A real good follow up with the color......

For a period they also worked on No. 51 and 52, San Joaquin Daylight, to Los Angeles.

She looked a bit odd with the over-painting back when I last saw her pass by with a 1958 excursion. But the 4460 is looking her best in your photo, with the great standard SP paint job. It's too bad today's railfans can't see her operate.

Yes well, I guess you'll just have to settle for poor old 4449.

Well, this old railfan was on that last trip to Sparks.  It was a grand farewell to the #4460, she was off to the National Museum of Transportation shortly thereafter.
