Back In The Day At Canby This Is Likely What You Would See!
Author: LoggerHogger

The Southern Pacific's Modoc Line was quite something to see both in the days of steam and even diesel.  It is no wonder that many dedicated railfans made the trek to the Northeastern Corner of California to record this line on film.

Fortunately for us Guy L. Dunscomb made more than one trip with his camera to capture the impressive steam action that was unique to this line.

One such day was a cloudy June day in 1947.  Guy had just followed a freight drag and then later caught a light engine move at Canby, California.
Such a sight coming down the track is certain to stop traffic!

As SP Cab Forwards go, that one looks like an elderly one.

Not too up on it but think they called that version a Whamp and think it was the only version to have that type of tender.  Am sure that Martin can say if that it proper or not.

There's always room for any of Guy's images.

4005 was part of the original order of Cab Forwards built in 1910, class MC-2.  She built as a Mallet Compound, rebuilt to simple in 1929 and reclassed to AC-1.  Vacated in Oct., 1947.

I love old Espee Malleys.  Note that monster Simplex injector behind the cab.

Is this light engine move headed away from us in the photo?  I've crossed the tracks there many times and it appears that Alturas is in the distance and the locomotive is headed that way.  Mountains are behind the photographer, we are looking ESE.

Best I can tell, we're facing compass northwest from the Hwy 299 crossing.  The locomotive is coming back from helping a train up Howards Gulch.  Alturas is behind the photographer about 20 miles away.  Note the slash burner from the Canby lumber mill.

"Wamp" is right name when compounded, would love to have seen and heard one of those engines.
