Steam & Excursion > AP 2-8-0 2768 is ready for the snow fight

The date is Oct. 1952 and 2-8-0 2768 has just been shopped and is about to run light to Colfax for the on coming winter battle to keep the line clear....Before the diesels arrived, SP has a small fleet of 2-8-0's that pulled flangers, running back and forth on the hill...The 2-8-0's would run at a good clip for a while, but would have to stop and built up the fire as the snow woud be flying onto the boiler and would cool or almost put out the fire..but once the fire was up, off the engine went....Another job for the 2-8-0's during heavy snow fall was to run doubleheaded on the AC's on the passenger trains, but this also applied to the freights out of Truckee... Freight traffic also saw ther 2-8-0's being added toEB's as well as WB's when a little more pushing power was needed....
