SP4449 in 1996
Author: nycman

Inspired by RailRat's great 3985 videos, I made another attempt at digitizing old VHS stuff.  I am missing a couple of pieces of equipment which would produce a much better quality product, but in the tradition of my old profession, flight test, I just played it on a flat screen TV and filmed the screen with a Bloggie.  No tripod, pacing 4449 on part of all her trips in 1996 and the celebration of Portland Union Station's 100th anniversary, my wife shot this through the windshield of our '91 Buick as we paced  4449 southbound returning from a trip to Vancouver, BC, on the stretch of I-5 north of Vancouver, WA where the tracks are between the I-5 lanes.  She did a good job.

Cool!!!   I seem to remember that Doyle REALLY enjoyed "blowing past" the southbound interstate traffic at better than 75 MPH.

Wow!!!   Thank you for the great video!  Someone said there is no word "alow" in Doyle's dictionary, and your masterpiece made me believe it.  The green and orange, the contrast is just great!

What I meant is "slow."  Sorry.

I noted someone cussing when the blue pickup truck got in the way... LOL

That truly is an amazing machine. We can lament on all the notable examples of steam engines that are gone forever, but we can also thank our lucky stars for the restoration and operation of this beauty and the man behind it.
