Steam & Excursion > The CMO Once Called Her A "Magnet Drug Through A Parts Bin"!

Some of the charm of backwoods logging railroads in the days of steam was the unique adaptations made to the logging lokies by the logging crews who ran these beasts on a daily basis.  Here is one such example.

We see in this fine 1930's view Bloedel Donovan #1 at rest on a Sunday at Skykomish, Washington.  She shows the modifications that often occurred to geared logging engines after a few years in this strenuous service.

A steam pump has been added to the running board and a huge tall spark arrestor adorns the stack.  Her oil bunker has been greatly enlarged to add fuel capacity while greatly restricitng the crew's rear visability.  She also has had a large fire tool box added to her cab roof.  Her pilot deck is adorned with the various tools and frogs needed for any adversity along the line.

These various changes to #1 resulted in a real "one of a kind" logging lokie that made logging railroads so fascinating to photograph.

I love it. Looks like a one-engine wrecker train.

The notch cut out of the enginehouse doorway to clear the stack is an especially nice touch.
