Its a wet 1954 asWB SP 4237 rolls by Martinez
Author: Barstool

Its Dec. 1954 and California has been hit wiltha heavy rain storm and what you see here is AC WB 4237 easing thru the water in from of the Martinez Depot. due a high tide, backing up alhambra creek and over flowing the backs and flooding down town main st., Ferry st. and the water is almost into the depot....but never makes it.....To the left is the 76 bulk oil station that takes two cars a week and to the right is where Shell oil has its triple dome tank cars, waiting to be reloaded....the 76 bulk oil station suppled all the 76 union gas stations with gas, motor oil and grease in the local area.....there was another 76 bulk oil station in Walnut Creek on the SN that also took tank cars...Steam power had no problem wading thru the water, but the desels was another story....

I bet the crew would be using the wipers on that day if they had had them!

Is that the year Marysville and Yuba City got washed away?

(edit) No, that was 1955, Dec.

The only windshield wipers a cab-forward had were one of the crew members reaching around with a clean rag for what little effect that had. My thanks to our great photographer for getting himself soaked that day.

Question: Something I never thought of until seeing this picture - Here the crew is picking up orders off the post. The train orders must have gotten wet, maybe soaking wet. Baggies had not yet been invented. What kept them readable?

They were wrapped in waxed paper.
