Work on 2926
Author: sptno

I have been trying to keep up with the restoration efforts on 2926.
I noticed that they are starting to install new sheet metal to cover the boiler.
Are they installing any type of insulation between the boiler and the sheet metal?
Just wondering.

Keep up the great work.  Looking forward to riding behind 2926 in the future.

Thanks

Yes the insulating material has arrived, but they are doing sheet metal fit up work first, before the insulation is applied. See the link for a batch of photos a few weeks ago.

When they took off the original jacketing, they found many pieces rusted through like a wool rug eaten by moth larvae. They saved these and stored them on top of the storage containers. Now that they are nearing completion, they took the ones that were in good shape and are using them as templates for replacements. For the ones that were too unusuable for template use, they are using pieces of cardboard and tracing placement outlines that will go to the sheet metal fabricator. The new sheet metal is then placed on the engine, bent and holes cut where piping comes through. Each piece is then removed and stored before painting and final installation after insulation is applied. The reason is that they want final installation to occur without having to cut and form the sheet metal pieces.
