C&O's 2-8-4 Berkshire No. 2727 as seen early one morning on July 20th, in 2014. You don't see many pics of her - nor hear much about her. She's not easy to photograph though June seems to be the time if you can snag a shot right before their 4 PM closing time or make a visit on a cloudy day. Built by Alco for the C&O in 1944 and donated to the Museum of Transportation in St Louis (Kirkwood), MO in 1956. /Mitch Date: 03/26/17 23:57 Re: C&O 2-8-4 No. 2727 photo Author: krm152 Great photo! Good to see the museum has the engine under rooof and maintains it well.

( say " cuh-NAW'...) Virtually the same boiler and firebox and drivers as the flat-land Berks, ---- but with 27" Pistons, booster equipped......truly a BEAST! They often romped with passenger trains, too. Several of the last ones built had all-welded boilers.... in the 2780-series...a few of the 'survivors' were scrapped in the 1970s Any survive? W. ------------------------------------------------------- "...Virtually the same boiler and firebox and drivers as the flat-land Berks..." Close, but no cigar! When we ran the 2716 in 1996, the FWRHS boiler guys needed to replace a few staybolts. No problem, we figured, we have lots of them in stock for the 765. We thought the same as you - it's the same boiler, right? WRONG! Our 765 staybolts were 1-inch too short! We found that there is 1-inch more water space between the inner and outer side sheets on the 2716 than there is on the 765. The boilers are very close, but not identical. Curious now that it's been brought up - I assumed without having cause till now to research it any further that all the 2-8-4's from the NKP, the C&O and Pere Marquette would have been nearly identical - were the modifications between them running improvements, specific requests from the operating lines or other reasons? What other railroads had Lima 2-8-4's? L&N? /Mitch Date: 03/27/17 16:59 Re: C&O 2-8-4 No. 2727 photo Author: Finderskeepers Mitch, the list of roads that had Lima berks is a long one, DT&I, Erie, Pere Marquette, Boston and Maine, Boston and Albany, L&N, Virginian, RF&P, Mopac, IC, and Santa Fe got some second hand from Boston and Maine near the end of WWII.

Could the difference be a ALCO VS Lima thing? Perhaps ALCO used slightly different measurements to get the same basic unit? |
