Nickel Plate 4-6-4 Hudson No. 170
Author: Mgoldman

For CPR_4000.  And Rich!

Another hard to photograph locomotive at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, MO (Kirkwood):

Photographed in Sepjulyber when the light is best, lol (a composite with an added blue sky), though I
wonder if such a shot would be possible mid-June just before the 4 PM close?  Photo was taken inter-
estingly enough; June 5th, 2011 at 4 PM but in the early morning.  I returned later that day but did not
photograph it again - assume there was a reason though... it could be senility, lol.

Nickel Plate 4-6-4 Hudson built by Alco (Brooks) in 1927 and donated to the Museum in 1957.

Apparently - she's the oldest surviving Hudson in the US.

It is my understanding that this engine along with Frisco 1522 were both considered for operation and we know who won. Perhaps Don can pipe in and tell us why.

Thanks for the photo.  Brings back memories -- sisters
(Lima built) 174 and 175 were assigned to the Buffalo and
Cleveland Divisions in the latter years of steam.  One was always
assigned to Buffalo as passenger protection power, but would
usually be seen in work train service.  Occasionally, they'd
get to let it all hang out on a baseball excursion or fantrip.
It was always a treat to see one doubleheading with a 2-8-4
on a freight, being moved to or from Conneaut for maintenance.

The C&O engine also got a look see, but it and the 170 being coal burners and having no real significance to the St. Louis area took them out of the running.  Naturally, I was (and am) very happy the 1522 was the one.

Thanks Don. It was a wise decision and the 1522 is a wonderfull loco. However, technically, the NKP did run into St. Louis area.

I've long thought that 170 would make a good companion to the 765 in Fort Wayne.

I'm sure that MOT will not part with it.

I agree - No. 170 would certainly be a unique locomotive to have back in service as there are no
operational 4-6-4's and few on display.  Also agree the MOT would likely not offer it for sale but
perhaps allow it to run in a fashion similar to No. 1522.

Among locomotives considered prior to 1522, I thouight I had read that the NYC Mohawk was
considered as well.  THAT would have been something as the IRM does (did then?) have a Frisco
locomotive in operation, granted, not quite the same.  The 1522 was certainly a fitting locomotive
to operate in that region, perhaps more so that others that did in fact run in the area.  I was not
aware that NKP ran into St Louis?  DId the NYC?  Do not recall the C&O in St Louis.

Parked outside since 1957. Sandblasted & repainted at least once, maybe more.  Any other questions?

Yes the NYC ran into St. Louis but not the C & O. At it's peak as many as 22 railroads used Union Station according to Wikipedia

Hats off to the NKP. All of their steam locomotives were beautiful. Thanks for posting. What a classic.

The New York, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad is best known as The Nickel Plate Road :)

Given their past history, probaly not - but it still would be nice.

I remember reading an article in TRAINS back in the late 80's, it was a 3 part series of steam rebirth in the mid-west, and one of the features was the 1522, the 1225 was another, along with the 587.  In that article on 1522, it mentioned that the 170 was considered, but one thing that was against it was that it was not big enough for the size of excursion trains of the late 80's and may have needed a diesel helper.  As was also mentioned, there were other considerations, the C&O 2-8-4, NYC 4-8-2, also, but the 1522 won out for all of the reasons stated here.  I.E.  Local ties, size, condition......
