Mike, I\'m sure this isn\'t going to help you decide. I\'m trying to post both photos. If it doesn\'t work there will be a second response.

Drivers slip? Oh yeah...
Author: alco636

When the 3985 visited Minnesota this past June, I saw the drivers slip once. Just as Steve Lee pulled her to a stop at Owatonna, MN the rear engine slipped pretty good. Nothing major, but a little excitement. As for the AFT-3985 thing, well I\'ll take the 3985 any day. No offense meant towards the 4449 and crew.

Hard to pick one over the other..... both are great and we are lucky to have them operating.

I guess I am biased since I haven\'t seen the 4449 in person. So I am going to go with UP 3985.

As much as I do like both, we\'ve been spoiled with two Pacifics of our own. Both sound sweeter than the hoarsecroakers on the Lima or Alco. There\'s something to be said about the rhythm of the exhaust of two Pacifics at the same time.

My best memory of the 3985 was her last visit to Portland a few years back. The trainset departed Union Station with the E units and met up with the 3985 a few miles down the tracks (3985 is to tight for the curves into the depot). It was raining pretty good that day, and the 3985 had a long train to start up the Gulch line grade. I was amazed at what sounded like a thousand drummers beating and blasting away. It was raw power with a hogger who knew his machine. No, the drivers didn\'t slip, but if they did it would\'ve been one hell of a mess!

As for the 4449, it was ridding in the cab blasting up Napa Vine Hill near Centrailia, WA, with the throttle to the roof, 79mph, with grade crossings at the summit. The sound was just incredible. I hope someday someone will get audio recordings at this location. This is the best location for stack talk between Portland and Seattle. On the flat, 79mph doesn\'t moove the throttle that far back, but this was the only time I\'ve ever seen her big chrome stick so far into the roof!

Nothing better than mainline steam working hard!

Sam--"hoarsecroakers"--I love it. You\'re right, those passenger whistles sound great. Beautiful pictures of those great Pacifics.

Mike, nice shots! Where\'s the 4449? Yes, TO does accept MPEG (movie) files. Go look in the Media Library.

Left or Right...Hmmm. Now that is one well balanced locomotive. Fitz, have a few more good ones but in retrospect I don\'t have as many as I should. Turns out I was sensory overload....for 3 days!
