Steam & Excursion > Promontory SummitDate: 03/06/05 20:31 Promontory Summit Author: UP6936 Went to the Ogden Hostlers Model Railroad Expo this weekend, on Saturday we drove up to Promontory. The 119 and Jupiter are being prepared for the summer season. Took a tour of the engine house there. Thought I'd share some photos of the shop.

Date: 03/07/05 06:02 Re: Promontory Point Author: NYCSTL8 There is another of the big Turbines at the museum in Union, Illinois.
Date: 03/07/05 15:37 Re: Promontory Author: toledopatch To echo the previous post on this matter, the last spike was driven at Promontory (or Promontory Summit). "Promontory Point" is a common misstatement of the location's name and is, in fact, on the Lucin Cutoff across the Great Salt Lake, which replaced the original Transcontinental main line.

Here's the agreement as set down: The Union Pacific company shall complete the track to the summit of Promontory Point [Summit] to which the Central shall build from the west, and the Central Pacific company shall pay to the Union the cost of the road without rolling stock from the terminus near Ogden as aforesaid to said Promontory Point, and shall pay to the Union one half the cost of the grading by the Union between the summit of Promontory and Monument Point done at this date [Ames 1969:317]. Tony Burzio San Diego, CA Date: 03/09/05 07:01 Re: Promontory Point Author: UP6936 Thanks for the info Tony. It kinda seemed to me after being there that a summit at Promontory would be the highest point, unless this was known as Promontory Pass. Too each there own, thats how I originally learned the name, and it was the point where the two tracks met, of course history isn't always right on naming stuff. Oh well it was still a good trip, and just wanted to share those photos with everyone. Have a good one.
