Best of A Day Out With '49

The SP 4449 went to Sherwood, as everyone visiting this board clearly sees, but the crew got to spend another day running the '49 around on the Portland & Western Railroad. A few months ago, the volunteers removed the booster truck axles (the rear "4" of the 4-8-4) in order to machine and refit them with roller bearings.

By running out to Hillsboro, back to Tualatin, and another round trip allowed the '49 to run at greater speeds than the line to Sherwood. This gives the crew the opportunity to see how much smoother it rides, and to monitor wear and the temperature of the bearing.

I'll be posting exactly 314 photos related to this past weekend on http://www.4449.com this afternoon, right now they're being processed into thumbnails and then into the web page. After that's done, then it's uploading, but I figure I'd post now since I won't be able to when its done. I've also posted a short pacing video with 4449 screaming incredibly at a crossing under the Audio/Video section of Trainorders.

First, here's 4449 rolling through the Hillsboro Yard after taking on water...

And finally, an awesome view from the east side of the Willamette River in Milwaukie, big thanks to the homeowner who invited us onto the property overlooking from the bluff!

Chris, did you guys actually use the booster on this trip? I know you rebuilt the entire trailing truck. I am so jealous of that Menefee trestle shot. It's beautiful and someday I will get one of my own. You have been a great source of information for this outing. Remember folks, it's a warmup for the NRHS convention.

Not just a print, but also a free copy of the upcoming video production, which we were able to shoot from the lawn.

Naw, you're just trying to show the vertical takeoff starting power of that loco with its booster cut in!
