Nostalgia & History > Ky Shortline steam early 1950's- M&NFDate: 03/12/07 02:25 Ky Shortline steam early 1950's- M&NF Author: Panamerican99 Morehead & North Fork 11 and 12, dates unknown but probably early 1950's. The 11 is the 2-6-2 that later was sold to the Everett RR and the 12 is an ex-Southern 0-6-0. The 12 is still in the M&NF engine house at Clearfield, KY. This shot appears to be taken not long after it was bought from the Southern since it has SR style lettering and safety stripes on the footbaords. Both photos were taken by George Yater.

At that time, the M&NF was still the same property DPM and Dr. Hastings had visited in 1954 for the "Smoke Over the Prairies" series in TRAINS Magazine. I was also pleased to find another 1955 Packard like the one I was driving parked near the r.r. h.q. Would give a zillion $$'s today to be able to once again head South from Muncie on Indiana Hiway 3 in the big green "400" in pursuit of steam power in revenue service. The hilly terrain in southern Indiana and KY gave the "Torsion-Level" suspension on the Packard a real workout. And it performed just as the ads back in '55 had claimed: "Levels the load, smooths the road." It doesn't get much better than steam and a T-L Packard on a sunny day in June.
