Espee GP40P-2/GP40X combo in Pomona, CA 1992
Author: PasadenaSub

Having been released from Bay area commuter duty, here's SP GP40P-2 7601 and GP40X 7230 with SP's Ontario local at Spadra on the west end of Pomona, CA in December, 1992. The train stopped to switch the customer just west of the 57 freeway overpass, before returning east. I think this was from the first roll of Fuji Veliva 50 slide film that I shot.

Thanks for looking,

Rich

Very nice shot.

The clouds in the background look like rain clouds which is definately fitting for the Nostalgia board. Based in AZ, I haven't seen a single drop of rain in six months. Bob

Where are Espee's GP40P-2/GP40X's today?!?

Sweet photo Rich! Wow, both rare beat-up flared Espee Geeps lashed up together. Funny how they used to be the pride of the fleet from their EMD delivery in the late 70's on up through the 80's. Commutes and hi priority freights for the first half of their life - whatever junk freights for the second half. Too bad they all appear to be heading for non-museum retirement places.

For the three SP GP40P-2's, the former SP 3197 / 7600 was sold off by the UP before renumbering and basically ruined. As you can see in the photo link for IHB 4010 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=24665, the rear distinct passenger steam generator cabinet hood end and ladder steps were chopped off and modified with a regular GP40-2's end. At least they used the rear end of an SP GP40-2. The fprmer-SP 3198/7601 is running around the yoUPee as ugly patch/primer painted UP 1373 http://www.trainweb.org/arkansastrains/railroad/upgp40/UP1373XSP/IMG10093.htm. Similarly, the SP 3799/7602 is also running around as an ugly patch bandit as UP 1375 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=144342. I'd actually like to see these guys repainted in the Z-stripe scheme.

For the former SP GP40X's, the original class GP40X SP 7200 (ex-NREX 7200) is now colorful TPW 4056 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=6113. The 7201 was unfortunately scrapped in ???. The SP 7230 became leaser HLCX 4300 http://mainlineseast.railfan.net/hlcx4300.html. The SP 7231 (ex-UP patch guy 9999 http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=6113) is now a fire engine red derated and modified Candian Pacific GP38-2 as CP 4521 http://www.fuzzyworld3.com/soo1/cp4521.html. Still, I hope that some organization out there targets and saves one (or more) of these unique Espee Geeps...
