Eastbound Passenger trains usually got a helper at Colton. On one occasion they tried a Baldwin. May 10, 1950. I don't think it worked to well as I only it once.

Here's another passenger train at Colton (actually a troop train) with a steam engine for a helper instead of another diesel with the FM H-24-66 #4807 as the road power.

Wow! They must've been desperate. Must've been a mighty slow trip!

Beaumont Hill is not real fast track but the steam helper would have been doing a lot of bouncing.

Gee, I think that one could title both of these old photos "The Odd Couple". In both cases, the road engines are fairly fast & the helpers are certainly not...I think that Consolidations were only authorized 45 in the Special Instructions portion of the EMP TT.

Enjoyed the troop train picture. Troop trains used what ever a RR had handy. One that I rode in Nov. 1943 had an SP AC-9 from Tucumcari to El Paso.
