The trip home, the long way. Part 6
Author: SP6190

Thursday September 2, 1976 and heading west again.

Our first stop of the day was at Alliance OH where the line to Cleveland splits from the old
Pennsylvania main line west. Our first train was a pig train with a GP40 (3151) and a U33B (2924) heading east in the early morning light. Following the pig train was a hopper train headed for Mingo Jct. with a GP38 (7994) and to F7a units (1847 & 1784). Meanwhile sitting in the siding south of the junction was the was the PC 6303, LV 641, and a PC 63xx (C628, C628, and C630) waiting for a new crew.

Moving on to Cleveland, we caught a couple of Shaker Heights streetcars doing their thing before heading farther into town and Collingwood yard and shops.

At the engine facilities there were quite a few units sitting around waiting for attention. Mostly they were F’s and GP40, but there were a couple of GP38’s and switchers present also.

Interesting signal collection on that cantilever. I've never seen a "tilting target" used in conjunction with "normal" signals before, or for that matter a tilting target that wasn't hand-operated. What did it govern and how was it used?

Nice FP7 vs. F7A comparison in the last two photos.

Nice recap of Northern Ohio action. Collinwood was the first place I really could depend on seeing F units during my limited travels back in the '70's. And the Mingo trains seldom disappointed as camera fodder.
