Railbiking in the 1980's
Author: Maximus

Railbiking in the State of Wisconsin in the 1980's was rewarding and hazardous at the same time. There was plenty of abandoned or about to be abandoned track around and with that came the hazards of poor track, missing joint bars and flooding.

Locotrol was interested in what lines these photos were taken on.

The first photo with the bad track was a C&NW line from Norma, Wisconsin to Cornell, Wisconsin. It served a paper mill at Cornell that produced a thick course paper which was then shipped to another location to be imprgnated with asphalt to become roofing paper.

The track with the missing joint bar is actually in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is a portion of the Soo Line that ran from Humboldt, Michigan to West Ishpeming,Michigan.

The flooded track was also Soo Line between Prentice and Medford, Wisconsin.

I think both the Cornell and Prentice right of ways are now bike, hike and snowmobile trails
