Arriving at LAUPT in March of 1971, F7 42C has led the train from Barstow where it replaced the FP45's that brought it from Chicago

Great shot! A perfect A-B-B-A set of F's. It don't get much better than that. Unless they're PA's, of course!-BMT

Why did they switch out the FP45's at Barstow? I thought that type of thing was done away with when RR's switched from steam to diesel?

Barstow has a large diesel shop and it may have been a planned change to get the FP-45 power into the shop for inspection rather than deadhead the power consist 150 back to Barstow after the run.

Wasn't the Barstow engine change a regular practice for years on the Chi-LA trains?

Barstow was the home of most of Santa Fe's passenger power, some trains changed power westbound and other trains changed power eastbound. The uses of a four F units was very rare on 17 and 18 at the time that the photo was taken. I was surprised to see it and I am glad it was posted.

Wow, can't blame that on a late hour can I? Oh well, I never was very good with numbers as my 8th grade math teacher Mrs. McKim could have readily attested.

You make up for getting a C in mathematics by getting an F in Los Angeles.

Dave Roth was looking over my shoulder and said;

That's clever.

I lived in Irvine 1970-1974. 46C was a regular on the San
Diegan's. San Diegan units rotated on the Super to Barstow
and back for servicing.

Regular Super power would rotate Barstow - LA on 17. LA-KC
on 18 ( and later to Chi with the FP45's and passenger equipped
F45's.) then KC - Barstow on 17.
