Santa Fe F45s pre-bonnet paint jobs
Author: PERichardson

Here are a couple of views of Santa Fe F45s as delivered.

1. No. 1920 at Redondo Jct, September 1968. Love that gas storage
tower in the background

2. A "45" extravaganza: F45 1921, 2 flares, F45. Bakersfield
September 1968.

Those were the days....

What Locomotive is that. That is just to the left of the first picture. I see a Red nose. Any ideas?

Looks like a Warbonnet F7 with cigar band.

Great pics there, I'm not entirely familiar with those gas storage towers, what purpose did they serve, or were they actual gas containers for storage?

IIRC, the frames supported telescoping storage tanks. When full, the tank would be as tall as the frame.

Looks like a Warbonnet F. The gas tanks used to be a feature on the landscape in many big cities, and usually pretty close to the RR yards. SWAG that it's because the natural gas pipelines ran along the RR right of ways. LA, San Franciso, Pasadena among others had the tanks that I can remember.

My knowledge of the gas tanks is what I can recall of a modeling project from Model Railroader back in the late 1960s or early 70s--the tanks consisted of several cylindrical sections that telescoped, so that the volume of the tank varied with gas pressure--helped smooth out surges in the gas flow. Modern gas transmission systems have eliminated the need for these tanks. Those of you out there with more knowledge can correct or embellish my memories.
