LAUPT 1978
Author: jmw

Here are some views of one particular morning at LAUPT in 1978. All sights were taken for granted at the time.

I never would have guessed then that the Los Angeles station would ever be as busy as it is now in 2007.

1. Sunset Limited.
2. Terminal switching was performed by Precision National locomotives.
3. Left to Right - Southwest Limited, El Camino, Sunset Limited.

Nice shots. One thing that strikes me is the absence of any people.

I recall LAUPT in the early fifties, when it was still pretty busy. They were selling tickets in the large lobby that is closed today.

Then in the late seventies, it was pretty much a ghost town.

Now, the rush hours are a real mob scene.

It has been an interesting evolution. Thanks for posting these photos and taking me back; I enjoyed the trip!

You dont see that many Amtrak Trains at one time. Unless there are a few late running Trains. Is the El Camino a San Diegan Train or a different Train? I dont ever recall hearing El Camino.

Thanks for sharing

The El Camino was an experiment by LA County back in 1978.

Interesting photos! I guess the UP shield on the telephone box in Pic #3 is a carryover from pre-Amtrak days - when that track was assigned to UP Passenger trains.

Thanks for sharing these,

Rich

Dang, yeah, LAUPT after reading in Trains about it some people were sayin' some of the track shoudl've gotten converted into helipads for connections to LAX, still now it's 10 track, soon to get 13-16 ressurrected (whenver they finally start breakin' ground on that) and Metrolink with Amtrak and on a Mon-Fri, the place can be a zoo!
