Amtrak E units with #6 at East End of Norden Feb 1974
Author: drew1946

Amtrak E8 #326 (formerly UP 929A)is on the head end of Amtrak Train #6, the Eastbound San Francisco Zephyr as it exits the long wooden snow shed which once protected the Eastward Main Track #2. The locomotive shows some distinct changes since it went to work for Amtrak. A snowplow has been added as well as icicle breakers for service on SP's Donner Pass line and a new set of plugs on the front end to make them M/U compatible with most other locomotives.

The E units did not last long on Donner Pass and were up there at the same time as the Nixon gas shortage which made chasing them a problem. By late 1974 the new SDP40F's would start appearing and the E's became history.
