Squeezing in one more for "Tunnel Motor Tuesday"......
Author: ATSF100WEST

Might as well end the day with a shot of the Class SD40T-2, in "pristine clean" condition, at Taylor Shops, July, 1974......

SP's scarlet and gray looked VERY nice on these units, IMHO......

Thank you for looking back with me,

Bob

In later years while operating in Oregon it received an old cast Nathan P5 horn.
Sounded real nice!

Back in the early 70's, "cinder blocks" were few and far between. (If you were around then, you'd know I'm not kidding, and the power didn't have to be new, as was the case here!)

Take Care,

Fantastic Portrait of a classic SP locomotive.
According to Strapac's book she was in service June 20 1974 and ten days later put on duty at Taylor yard. Good chance she hasn't turned a revenue wheel in your photo. Yes, some of us remember clean SP power.
Thanks Bob!

Bob....thanks for posting one of the finest lokes that the scarlet and grey ever had. I have fond memories of seeing the 8300 many times working through the Tehachapis. This is definitely the best she ever looked, although seeing her with blistered paint below the brake grids portrayed just how hard she worked in mountain service over the years.

It's pretty and all but it just looks .. so unnatural that way.
You know what I mean about the beloved and dirty SP.

Looks like the paint for those units held up pretty well. If they kept the same series of numbers going on the UP side when some of these became leasers, here's her sister a few (like about 34) years after that in Cumberland, Md.

I'm going to sneak this one in, even though it's Wednesday. The 8300, 01, 05, and 02 descending Cajon on the Mojace cut off in November 1974. Photo by Mike Johnson, from my collection.-BMT

As noted above, it was renumbered to UP 8663 (Patch only, still in gray/scarlet but with speed lettering). It then went to G.E. Capitol leasing (GECX) and continued to work for UP but with the speed lettering black lined-out and "GECX" on the cab, as the photo above of it's twin, SP8306/UP8664 illustrates. G.E. then sold the unit to Helm Leasing which has it slated to be renumbered HLCX 6156. As far as I know, it presently remains in it's GECX appearance.
