Union Pacific Golden Spike Centennial Expo train - 1969
Author: SGillings

In early 1969, Union Pacific had an exhibition train touring. The train had numerous historical equipment and displays in a couple of cars. A real classy way to celebrate May 10th.

No idea. Perhaps John Bromley knows.

The locomotives (Virginia & Truckee #18 "Dayton" and #22 "Inyo") are part of the collection of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Some of the cars from those photos are there as well.

The passenger/expo car is part of the collection at the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden.
Three photos of the car taken in July of 2005.

What is the history of that car? With those trucks it looks like maybe from a 193x edition of City of SF or something along those lines.

A caption for photos of the car, on page 113 of UP Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment by Stagner and Yanosey indicates:

"To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, U.P. rebuilt 1942 chair car #5338 into a mobile exhibition car which contained artifacts associated with the early days of the U.P. The trucks used underneath this car were of a unique design never otherwise used."

Based on that information, Volume 14 of The Official Pullman-Standard Library, referencing the order that included 5338 indicates:

"In March of 1941, the Union Pacific Railroad ordered fifteen 48 seat coaches for service in the Challenger and other trains. These cars were delivered in February and March 1942 as lot 6663, plan 7468. ... The cars rode on unique triple-bolster trucks provided by LFM Atchison Company with Timken or SKF roller bearings."

Hope this helps.

The expo car's been sitting in Ogden for a number of years. Thanks for the pics of the interior! I wonder what's inside it now.
