Nostalgia & History > Sometimes a Big Hook needs to be rescuedDate: 12/06/08 13:48 Sometimes a Big Hook needs to be rescued Author: JPB In the winter of 1970, an EL wreck crane tipped over on the super-elevated curve on EL's main line track 2 a half mile east of the Owego station (not sure why this happened...). Apparently EL called out a 2nd crane and requested assistance from the LV who had a wreck train stored 20 miles away at the Sayre, PA shops, to right the errant EL hook (seen lying on its side in pic #1). And, to make matters worse, it was snowing to beat the band.

Is the base solid concrete or some other ballast that keeps them stable while hauling up wrecked equipment? Thanks for the pics of that rescue.

Best and quickest way to capsize a hook is to not set the outriggers. Date: 12/06/08 16:05 Re: Sometimes a Big Hook needs to be rescued Author: pramer So where have all the Big Hooks gone to? Years ago I saw it in action with a Lehigh Valley Big Hook clearing a wrecked Reading ore train. Also saw a pair of Reading hooks clearing a different wrecked ore train. Very interesting operation.
Gonut Date: 12/07/08 19:13 Re: Sometimes a Big Hook needs to be rescued Author: 2ebright There are still a few active "big hooks." Here is ex D&RGW #028, now a Union Pacific wrecking crane. This photo was shot in September 2007 in the Price River Canyon, Utah, a few miles west of Helper. The wreck train was brought over from Grand Junction, Colorado, but the crane was not used to clear the wreck.
