From the camera of the Late John Hungerford comes this October 1, 1955 shot of Santa Maria Valley Railroad No. 21. She was built new for the SMVRR by Baldwin as construction number 58368, in April of 1925, and was the favorite engine of Captain G. Allen Hancock the railroad’s owner. Together they closed out steam operations on the shortline on February 24, 1962. After passing through a succession of owners she is currently undergoing restoration in Astoria, Washington by the Astoria Railroad Preservation Association. Thanks to Tom Moungovan for this vintage Kodachrome.

Local historians have determined Caboose No. 170 to have been built around 1907 for the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railway as waycar No. 3317. It was purchased from the SMV by Rancher John Loomis in 1963, and placed on his ranch where it remained until he donated it to the Oceano Depot Association, in 2004. Today it sits alongside the restored Oceano depot adjacent to the Coast Line in Oceano, CA.

No. 170 has been recently restored and carries a Santa Maria Valley Railroad logo on the station side, and a Los Angeles And Salt Lake Route logo on the trackside.

Cheers,
Jack

Thanks for sharing those pictures. Think there are 3 Santa Maria Valley steam engines in Oregon. In various states of restoration.
Thanks again.

Todd, it never occurred to me, but you're right!

Cheers,
