Assuming that is coal we see atop the 3985's tender, is there another way to tell from her exterior she is burning coal?

I believe the conversion to oil for 3985 took place in 1990

Yes its coal. I rode my first 3985 trip prior to this one in 1987, and again in June 1988.
These trips to Laramie were magnificent. Each trip had about 12 runbys for the day, and
as you can see there were no water cars, nor diesels for these trips. If you check out of
UP Steam Vol 1 on youtube you will see my shot in the cab as we entered Hermosa Tunnel
West Bound in 1988. We got blackened and shirts burned on that day!!!

South African 19Ds 3340/2747 at Alicedale on July 11, 1983. The regular Grahamstown to Alicedale passenger as I recall.
