San Francisco: "As we remember it !! "
Author: KeyRouteKen

Here's a sampling of many streetcar views that have recently passed into my hands..
How many of you can remember these scenes ??

KRK

1. "Peek-a-Boo" --- "I see you" ...
MUNI Car # 139 "L" (Taraval) Line at West Portal of Twin Peaks Tunnel. Date unknown.

2. "Transit Competitors on Market Street"
MUNI Car # 76 "L" (Taraval) Line and MSR # 112
on the # 5 McAlister Line.

3. Bay Bridge Transit Terminal (Eastbay Terminal)
Notice that most of these cars are on the # 3 track which was paved over in later years. Also note the Dispatcher's Tower in front of the middle set of windows on the building.

4. How many times do you see this arrangement ??
Cable Cars and Streetcars sharing the same street !!
MUNI Car # 41 and MSR Cablecar # 501, together on Lombard Street.

5. MUNI Ry Car # 18 on a "Special Excursion" on the
# 26 Line.

6. MUNI Car # 21 on the "F"-Line.
Location and Date unknown.

Also, #3 was in the era when the Terminal still bore the words "Key System" on the front, in the same lettering.

Thanks for posting.

Those bay window buildings like in pic 4, or the ones like them always say San Francisco (and sometimes Oakland) to me. I can remember them from my trips up there when I was a little guy. Sure there were a few in Los Angeles, but not many and they mostly all disappeared a long time ago.

Pic 4 would be on Columbus Ave., not Lombard St. The F-Stockton and Powell-Mason grip shared the street between Mason and Taylor streets.

Pic 6 location is at North Point and Hyde Streets. Inbound F-Stockton car crossing the Hyde St. cable car tracks.

Update your caption records, folks.

Hey Guys-- I really think it would be in my best interest to quit posting anything. Lately I get taken to task for stating the wrong locations. I could just place a photo without location and let you guys assign it to someplace, BUT, I am writing down what the photographer placed on the back of the print. Nuf' said!! Bye.

I believe I contributed some useful information. Therefore, I stand by my post.

My captions appear on many photos you have posted, Ken, from John Harder's collection. The location of a shot is researched carefully and is (hopefully) correct when I finally write a caption. The information on the back of a print is not always correct from what I have learned. So I am being helpful in making the descriptions that appear here more accurate--for those that care.

John-- I do NOT want to start a fight on Todd's Board.
If anybody in the hobby has pictures of any kind, AND, the photographer's notes can't be believed, then what good are they ?? See my point.
I really do appreciate the corrections that you and others have and that is a good thing. So we'll leave it at that.. OK ?

Thanks.

Car in Photo 5 advertises a play, "Accidentally Yours," starring Grant Mitchell and Billie Burke. According to IMDB, they appeared in five movies together, ending with "The Man Who Came to Dinner" in 1942.
She is most famous as Glinda, the Good Witch, in "The Wizard of Oz."
