Nostalgia & History > A jem spotted on my honeymoonDate: 04/02/10 11:28 A jem spotted on my honeymoon Author: dieselman SP-4401
Spotted this fine SP caddilac while passing through Grants Pass Or on 8-20-84 with my new wife. This unit was built as the 5480 in March 1956,renumbered to 3954 in 1966 ,rebuilt to 4401 released in 6-75 from SP'S Sacramento Shops.Somewere along the line she lost her front fuel tank which makes her much lighter for bad trackage on the Oregon Div branches, and a real oddity to look at plus probably a much rougher ride for the crew.A few SD7's had this happen that had steam generators not many SD9's that iv'e seen are missing a tank. She was later retired, stored in the weeds then later sold to Matt Monson in 7-98.
