Mother, Slug, & Amtrak Too
Author: knightswell

I know the thread title sounds like a bad 70's movie, but instead it's a unique lashup of engines at Taylor Texas in April of '98. At the time, the Amtrak units were put to use on freight trains for a few months. Someone told me the two U.P. mother units were ex-WP, and the slug was ex-Katy. Don't know how true that is though.

I do know that the Katy had a mother-slug-mother that was stationed in San Marcos, TX that were ex Katy units for locals in the area. This operation survived into the UP era and then they kinda disappeared. Those do look like ex WP units.

Those "Mother" units are in fact Ex-WP.

The slug should be a former KCS GP30 that MK cut down into a slug for UP.

Your photo angle reminds me of the classic EMD artwork from the early 70s RR trade publications! Does anyone out there have any example images???

Search for EMD and you'll find a number that look like what you're thinking of:

Good grief. I think I just hit the jackpot! In only 5 minutes, I found a Howard Fogg painting as a mag cover. Thanks, Evan. You da man!!!
'Course here goes another 2 or 3 hours of pleasurable surfing that I should be spending on scanning/info up-dating! I guess I should be a
little more careful what I ask for...<:)
