L&N DeCoursey Yard 1970
Author: refarkas

It was the summer of 1970, and L&N's DeCoursey Yard in DeCoursey, KY was a place to see ALCOs. Thankfully the L&N was friendly and gave photo permission, so it was off to enjoy the ALCOs and to take photos. Although I was only able to take a few photos, here are three of the best.
Photo one is L&N 100, 315, and 316 heading through the yard.
Photo two is L&N 316 putting out the legendary ALCO smoke.
Photo three is L&N 313, 127, and 124 making another all ALCO lashup.
What memories these photos bring back!
Bob

Nice pics....L&N was a friendly railroad... My brother in law worked for them and I went to a company picnic in the Germantown part of Louisville in 1969. What a great family oriented company....Just think, back then I was probably rubbing elbows with old hoggers....Wished I had asked questions....

Love that second shot of the "honorary steam engine" loading up. Good thing there was no AQMD back then or they wouldn't even have lasted as long as they did.-BMT

I loved DeCoursey Yard, I visited there in 1979 and was VERY treated well.
The L&N was very friendly, not like what we have left in the post 9/11 lock-down World we live in.
I was totally bummed when I returned in 1997 and found nothing but weeds.

Nice shots Bob. Here is L&N 315 in it's second life as a power/cab car on the LIRR. Taken at Port Jefferson,NY., March 1975.

Decoursey today. In the first photo we are looking south from the middle of the bowl yard towards the hump tower, retarder operators tower and where the terminal administration building once stood. In the second photo is Building 26, which was a trim tower. Finally we see Q541 passing the field that once was the bowl yard and the somewhat still extant A Yard to the left of the service road.

Thanks to Cannonball and J. E. Landrum for the after shots of the FA and DeCoursey.
