We're off to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wiz-
Author: SP6190

ard of OZ. Well it's that time again. Time to head east from beautiful southern California to Kansas and spend three wonderful days listening to my daughter say, "are we there yet, or how many more minutes". At least this time we didn't have to stop at all the state markers for pictures.

This time I made sure the overnight stops were made somewhere near a track. Gallup, New Mexico on the first night out, and Dalhart Texas the second night.

The date is August 11, 1984.

#1 Santa Fe 3806 heading east out of Seligman Arizona.

#2-3 Amtrak #3 at Gallup NM, with the 293 leading. So much for day one.

Day two, Sunday August 12, 1984.

#4 It is a gorgeous morning in New Mexico, where we make our/my first stop at the CO Rd 19 crossing of the Santa Fe in Prewitt. Although we are waiting for a eastbound, the first train through is a westbound, the 5209 with two SD40-2's, two SD45's, and a GP35.

#5 The next train through is another westbound, the 5087.

#6 Then finally, it's the 5709 with the eastbound.

While waiting for the trains at Prewitt I noticed what seemed to be unit and cars about a half a mile to the east. So It was not time to check it out.

#7 On what I found out later was the west leg of the wye at Baca (Prewitt on the road map) mp 114.7, was a RS-11 now owned by a contractor, former Apache 901, ex SP 2921(?), tied up for the weekend on the end of a work train.

#8 The one that almost got away. Hey you got to catch these things. At least that is the way I used to think.

#9-10 The MP 2973 leads the 1974 on a ballast train with is tied down on the east leg or the wye at Baca. These units were owned by a contractor.

#11 MP 2974.

#12 One more before we go. Santa Fe 5000 leads a eastbound at West Baca.

#13 SP 9208 near Santa Rosa NM heading east.

#14 SP 6309 at Tucumcari.

On to Dalhart, Texas that is.

#15 After arriving Dalhart, and depositing the wife and daughter in a motel, it's time to check out the Cotton Belt. Checking out the yard I find a westbound coming in with the Milwaukee 159 leading.

#16 Waiting for a new crew is the 9332 with two MP15AC's and a U33C.

#17 I catch the Milwaukee 159 making a set-out at the west end of the yard.

#18 A little while later another eastbound arrives with the 8255 leading.

#19 While shooting the 8255 I hear a southbound (?) BN train. Here is the MKT 628 leading a loaded coal train a few miles east of town.

#20 The last train of the day is the 8365 east, with another two Milwaukee units in the consist. That is a total of seven Milwaukee units on three trains.

Great catch of the Olympic unit before it was repainted and then destroyed.

More great shots! Bummer that the SP 7347, the Olympic painted engine, wasn't on the point. You sure lucked out in Dalhart, I was through there a couple of times either heading out or returning home from railfan outings around this same time frame and never saw that much action!

Don't see many MoPac U30C's. Thanks for those and all the rest.
