Fun stuff.

The operator no-doubt had to drive out to the wye to hoop up to this train, a consolidated 138-140 coming off the Trunk and headed down the Gorge. Trains were running pretty late on this day, if on time 138 should have been through there in the morning. It will be after dark after they meet 137. Wonder if the 1979 east is a late-running 398.

At the time, 137 and 138 ran with bulletined crews Vanncouver - Bend, wonder if they made it without dying on this day.

Best regards,

Rob L.

So what year was the CTC extended east of Stevenson to Pasco? Obviously after 1972 since they were still operating under TO authority in 1972.

If I recall correctly, 1976 Stevenson to Wishram. After that it went in in stages Wishram to Pasco. The operators at Roosevelt and Plymouth lasted a very long time. Would have to look it up in my book.

Man, issuing orders for trains 8-9 hours away from current time. Wonder how many times that order had to be amended?

The CTC ended in between Maryhill and Wishram as of February 1983.

Oh, and the RGM on the train orders and clearance was Robert G. McCartney, Chief Dispatcher at the time out of Vancouver, WA.

If you're referring to the first order, it was pretty commonplace to issue a work order with all trains that were expected to traverse the work area and the DS would add time as necessary. Work trains could be a major pain for a busy DS in train order territory.

Wording seems a little awkward here.

Anyway, I looked it up and found the following:

CTC installed Vancouver - Skamania in October, 1970
CTC extended Skamania - Stevenson in 1971, second main track Vancouver - McLoughlin also added in 1971
CTC extended Stevenson - Wishram in 1973
I think Don meant that CTC was extended Wishram - Maryhill in 1983.
CTC completed Maryhill - Pasco in 1986.

UP put in CTC from Crates (end D.T. just west of The Dalles) to Troutdale in 1976. CTC Hinkle - Biggs (end D.T. east of The Dalles) had been installed in the late 1960s.

Best regards,

Rob L.
