Has this old LP ever been re-released or is it available on CD? I tried to play mine a while ago and it's just shot. I think I've had this album since the late '50s or early '60s and still enjoy it.
I wonder how many of the old LPs have been redone over the years. Howard Fogg did some good ones as did Mobile Fidelity.
I just bought Stan Kistler's CD from the ATSF society and it replaces a tape that was getting pretty threadbare.
Much better listening that the fantrip recordings. These were workaday engines.
Can anyone help?

Kistler's CD contains the ATSF 5021 recording that was on "Whistles West," but I'm not aware of a digital re-release of the whole album. Not too many old railroad LP's have come out on CD. A few Mobile Fidelity releases like Steel Rails Under Thundering Skies, Mr.D's Machine, and Interurban Memories came out on CD over a decade ago. Daylight Sales still has the first two available, plus a number of Arkay/L&H Railsonics re-releases:

Somebody came out with a CD of the "digitally processed to simulate HiFi" version of ATSF 3759's farewell excursion over Cajon recently:

O. Winston Link's N&W albums are available on CD from the N&WHS:

The original album of 3759's trip always sounded to me like it was recorded from the bottom of a 55 gal drum. I wonder if that was something the studio added? It was very distracting.

I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded the Musicoasis software, but can't figure out how to get to Whistles West to download it.

Please note that on track #A5 you have the opportunity to hear a 3 cylinder SP locomotive in operation and its outstanding chime whistle. This is the very best thing on the record.

The "original" release by Seymour F. Johnson Enterprises, which actually featured 3759 on the record jacket, didn't have all the bogus reverb. The rights were eventually sold to High Fidelity Recordings (HiFiRecord), who remastered and "doctored" it in an effort to make it sound Hi-Fi (a lot of that sort of nonsense befell other perfectly good recordings in the late 50's).

For comparison, this is a sample of 3759 departing Pasadena, CA that someone recorded off the HiFiRecord LP, the mass-produced record that has Nevada Northern 40 on the front of the record jacket (and also the version that Amazon is selling on CD):

The attached "movie" is the same sample off the original Seymour F. Johnson LP release. My reading of the copyright statute suggests that a 16 second clip posted noncommercially for purposes of commentary/criticism falls within the limits of "fair use."

I don't think "Whistles West" is available for download on that site. All the enticing "Download!" arrows arrayed around the track list are paid ads trying to trick people into downloading software or something else they didn't necessarily want.

Yeah, I have the O.G. version in my collection, I never realized it was remixed and rereleased. I also have the Beatles in mono on vinyl. So I'm all set.
