A few ex-ATSF and CB&Q cars - Nov 79
Author: gcm

(1) Stored in New Orleans.
The Picuris was one of the oldest cars Amtrak received from the railroads.
A dormitory bar lounge built in 1937 by Budd for the Santa Fe.
It was used on the first lightweight consist of the Chief.
I rode in the car a number of times on the Lone Star.
I can't read the number of the next car but it looks like an ex-Santa Fe dormitory lounge ?

(2) Also in New Orleans was this Budd built ex-CB&Q dome dorm buffet lounge car (Silver Kettle) built in
1956 for the Denver Zephyr.

(3) Another old car was this 1938 Budd built diner for the ATSF.
Here it is on the Sunset Limited at Houston in March 1978.

These cars had classic pre-war Budd features. I first encountered them on Santa Fe trains in the 1960s. As a kid, I would hang out in the vestibule of an adjoining car and look in at a car full of people; waiters and steward busy at work. I remember eating the best hamburger of my life in one of these cars about 1966. They were, to use a modern phrase, beyond cool.

The Picuris is one of many, many cars purchased by Iowa Pacific in recent years, so it should be hitting the High Iron again before too long.

Picuris is 75 years old this year! You just can't kill a Budd- built stainless steel passenger car! (Well, not easily...)

Wish that AMTK had not installed the vile interiors and opaque lexan in these cars but that was a vain hope in the late '70s.
