What a change since that photo was taken. Today the tracks are shaded by I-280, SP steam is gone, the industries to the left are gone, and the head-end cars bound for the REA and U.S. Mail facility (also gone) are history. Kinda odd seeing no Greyhound busses parked along Seventh Street.

Just the coast mail with some express boxcars in the consist. A mixed could have general freight in the consist and there would be no/few restrictions on the type carried. The mail train, of course, could only carry rolling stock approved for high speed operation and passenger service, steam and signal lines for example.
