Nostalgia & History > Tehachapi Depot-Where?

Found some Santa Fe photos in the Dollar Box at the hobby shop today.

I'm guessing this photo were taken in the late 50s or early 60s. Totally anonymous. No info at all

A Santa Fe freight is fixing to pass by the depot.

My knowledge of Tehachapi is very limited. Is the town very far from the Loop?

Appreciate any info anyone might have concerning this photo.

Cant say much for the picture besides that its a pretty neat one of yesteryear. That Santa Fe is headed Westbound towards the loop. The depot is at MP 360.6 and the loop is about 8 miles West downgrade at MP 352.2. Its officially known in the timetable as Walong. There is tons of information on Tehachapi on this site as it is a SoCal favorite. Recently that depot was restored and now houses a little railroad museum.

That's a '53 Chevy and a '55 Buick. License plate CA yellow on black, which would place it before 1956 when they changed to black on yellow.

That restored depot is very very well done and worth a visit. We were there last year.

The new Tehachapi depot is better described by the word "replica", than the word "restored". It is a completely new structure, from the ground, up!

Yes, because it was the target of arsonists either before or during the restoration process. Regardless of its status as replica, it is still VERY well done and worth a visit.

The fact remains, there was nothing there to "restore". Totally new construction!

Might I suggest a mapping program? Even Google Earth!
Just type in 'Tehachapi, CA' and you can scroll around the area to your hearts content.

They changed back to yellow on black in 1963 (and then to yellow on blue in 1969). Prior to 1963 plates had the year on them and thus were changed out each year. Starting with 1963, the plates did not have the year stamped on them and thus remained with the car for it's lifetime. Those plates look like post-1963:

I dont think it was arsonists. I was told it was kids playing with illegal fireworks that caused the stations demise.

The plate on the Chevy is a 1963 yellow-on-black. The older yellow-on-blacks were larger and had a different numbering system. If you look closely on the Chevy you can see the "ABC 123" numbering scheme. They started the stickers in 1957, the year after they issued the black on yellow plates. As kids we'd get the old metal "corner" tags that showed the year of registration on the '51 black plates.

I hate to admit it but I remember the '51 plates from when I was a little kid. Once a car guy always a car guy I suppose. BTW, thanks for the link to the plate site.
