Stoddard-Waite Monument
Author: flynn

I thought the problem of the name of the monument [Sante Fe and Salt Lake Trail Monument] in the photo of the six men in a automobile [pictures 6 and 7 in my posting, Cajon Pass] was solved.

Then sgtfhrn introduces the Stoddard-Waite Monument in a reply to my Cajon Pass posting.

“The monument in pictures 6 and 7 is the Stoddard-Waite Monument. A little more info and a picture is available here.

http://www.landmarkquest.com/sanbernadino/chl578.htm

For perspective, the Santa Fe and Salt Lake Trail Monument would be located in the far left background of picture 6 near the base of the bare hill (right behind the umbrella) on the left (north) side of Crowder Canyon.”

I now offer this explanation. The six men in the car in pictures 6 and 7 attended the Dedication Ceremony of the Santa Fe and Salt Lake Trail Monument on December 23, 1917, at Cajon Pass. On the way there or on the way back they stopped and had their picture taken in the car in front of the Stoddard-Waite Monument.

The Stoddard-Waite Monument was dedicated on May 18, 1913.

The following excerpt is from the above website.

“Stoddard-Waite Monument: The first monument set in the Cajon Pass was dedicated May 18, 1913 to commemorate the early pioneers who came by horseback and wagon train through the passage. Sheldon Stoddard and Sidney P. Waite, two of the most well-known pioneers who traveled through the pass in 1849 were honored attendees. This spire-shaped monument, listed as California Historic Marker No. 578, was placed along the former Santa Fe/Salt Lake Trail. It is located in a thick grove of Cottonwood trees near the CHP truck scales on the southbound I-15, about three-quarters of a mile south of Highway 138. The monument is on private property owned by the San Bernardino County Museum, and is only accessible by special permission.

Santa Fe and Salt Lake Trail Monument: A second monument of similar size and shape was erected in 1917 just a few hundred yards northeast of the Stoddard-Waite Monument. A festive ceremony was held to dedicate the monument, once again attended by pioneers who had traveled the early wagon roads. The concrete spire, listed as California State Historic Landmark No. 576, is located at the end of Wagon Wheel Road (south of McDonalds), just east of the northbound I-15 CHP truck scales.”

I found a picture of Sheldon Stoddard and John Brown, Jr. I believe both of these men are in the automobile in pictures 6 and 7 on my Cajon Pass posting. Sheldon Stoddard with the white beard is in the front seat next to the driver. John Brown, Jr. is behind Sheldon Stoddard.

Picture 1 “Title: Sheldon Stoddard, February 8, 1830 - April 4, 1919 and John Brown, Jr. Creator: Unknown. Description: Sheldon Stoddard and John Brown, Jr. at the Pioneeer Monument dedication ceremony December 23, 1917. Publisher: San Bernardino Public Library. Date: 1917. Format: 1 photographic negative, 4 x 5 in.

On the above website was a very small picture that was similar to picture 5 that I posted on my Cajon Pass posting except it was more widely cropped and included material that was not in picture 5.

I found a larger version of this very small picture on the following website. This larger version also had a text that named the men in the picture.

Picture 3 is from the above website. “At the Perris home - standing, left to right, De La Montaigne Woodward, John Brown, Fred T. Perris, Silas Cox and Sidney Waite; inside coach, Sheldon Stoddard and William McDonald; driver, William F. Holcomb.”

In an effort to try and find the location of picture 1, up10turntablemorrisonc.jpg , in my posting Anyone Know Where It Is , http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,2920795 , I did a Google Image Search for Railroad Morrison, Missouri. I did not find the picture I was looking for but I did find the interesting picture below.

Picture 4 is on the following website,

Picture 5, 6, 7 and 8 are from the above website.

Picture 5, “Below are close-ups of the men:

The late Mrs. Iva Shaw identified the third man from the right is Bert Butler.

Lisa Nelson reports thats her Aunt says that the man 2nd from the left is definitely Nealy Martin Addison [her father, Lisa's grandfather]. They say that he most certainly worked for the railroad in Moundville. She said that Nealy Martin had a gold Hamilton watch from the railroad that he had given to his son, her father, and that it was then given to them and she still has it.”
