Is it is or is it not Amtrak?
Author: milfordgap

It is 1984 on the west side of the old B&O deck bridge in Loveland, OH. Note the different number boards on the locomotive. If anyone has the dirt on this train, please post.

Is that an impromptu horn installation on 706?

I think Chessie leased a P30 and sleeper for use on
their track inspection train

You are correct, the Chessie System borrowed a locomotive and a sleeper for this special.

That first photo is a nice composition. As for the Pooch, we'd see these used on the TGC's from time to time too. I don't recall seeing any horn mod like this one though, interesting catch.

I see a cord running up through the grab irons, around the windshield to the top of the cab. I think that is a video feed to a monitor on one or all of the cars. I saw similar setups on Santa Fe director specials back in the 80's.

Here's the same train coming through Warwick, Ohio on 06/26/1984. Thanks for posting the other shots. Now I have more information.

During the 1984 NRHS Convention, the Chessie OCS train showed up at Covington. A handfull of fans, myself included, made our way to the old platforms of the Covington Station to photo it as went by. I have been wondering; are the station and platforms still there?

Yes, the Covington Station has been lovingly restored by a private developer and there are remnants of the platforms at track level.

In 1984 the Chessie System converted their business car fleet to Head-End Power and borrowed Amtrak P30CH and a 10-6 Sleeper.

In 1984 the Chessie Track Geometry train's power/dormitory car, TGC-4, was being upgraded. The railroad leased the P30CH for head end power and the sleeper for the train's crew for the season.

Wow! I had no idea there was a CPL signal in downtown Loveland.

How much longer after removal of the 2nd track did the signals last?
