few "San Diegans" from the boxes . .
Author: 3rdswitch

. . these slides once again came out of extras boxes from the garage taken in the early years of AMTRAK specifically the "San Diegans" that ran between Los Angeles and San Diego, CA. A little variety in the mid seventies. These are not the greatest and required a bit of work.
top: a pretty new SDP40F leads a westbound San Diegan through Anaheim, CA on Santa Fe's Fourth District of the Los Angeles Division 12-74.
middle: a pair of E units led a westbound San Diegan through Bandini, CA on Santa Fe's Third District 1-76. YES the date is correct and was taken almost two years AFTER the above new SD.
bottom: only a year later a new F40PH leads new Amfleet equipment westbound through Valencia, CA on the Fourth District 3-77. Talk about timing, I never noticed until today the pair of fighter jets above taking off from El Toro Marine base. This is ninety mile per hour territory for Amtrak and a couple hundred miles per hour for the jets, timing could not have been much better.

The shot of the train a Valenica was taken not too far from where a San Diegan and. Jet fighter collided in 1958.

224 was on the first Amtrak train I rode from Del mar to SD.
It is still a Cabbage somewhere.
Those are Douglas A4 Skyhawks overhead, a great composition.
I made airframe parts and was later a planner at Douglas Torrance.

I think this shot is northbound, in the vicinity of the SR 91 overpass in Anaheim. There were some spurs that cut off from the main scattered here and there. Orange had a team track downtown and plenty of crossovers but it seems that there is a spur cutting off and swinging off at an angle and downtown Orange didn't have one of those.

The shot is from Walnut Ave in Orange looking south. The track curving away on the left side of the picture is the ex-PE line from Orange to the SP interchange at Marlboro on the Tustin Branch. The Villa Park Orchards packing house No. 2 (formerly the Santiago Orange Growers) is to the left with the PE going to the otherside of the building. The big curve at the junction with the Olive District is behind Joe.

After more study I can see that. I had forgotten about the PE island, and even if I had remembered it, I never saw that curve from where I would watch the action. There was an industrial area just to the photographer's right that received a tank car or two from time to time.

Looks like a pair of A-4's...the VMF 214 Black Sheep Squadron flew A-4's outta El Toro...lord only knows what squadron these two belong to, but still pretty interesting...as a youngster, my dad took us to an airshow at El Toro sometime mid 70's, and Greg Boyington was there...real cool.

Oh yeah, by the way, nice pictures as always...
