Any way to tell from this pic? How many
GS4/5s got the Universal main driver?

There were only 2 GS5's, #4458 and #4459, and none of the pictures I can find of them show them having that type of main driver. So it's probably a GS-4.

Hadn't noticed the wheel wear until studying today. Check out the shadow just below the brake shoes on the second axle driver. Ran the wheels off of it before retirement.

The two GS-5 locomotives were supposed to have a circle painted at the center of the driving wheel to signify roller bearings. The rest had stars as they had solid bearings. Other than that, the only way to tell was by the number.

Well, no, the roller bearing-equipped journals were quite evident on the trailing truck.

The drivers don't look to be 80 inches , using the young lady as a gauge.....my guess is this is a GS3. The main driver has been replaced and of all the photos I have, only 4424 has this main driver.

GS-3s had 80" drivers.

GS-2s had 72" drivers.

Anyone seen a pic of a GS3 with
a tapered main rod?

Church's Daylight Locomotives book has pix of two GS4s (tapered main rods) with Universal main drivers: 4437 on p. 119 and 4451 on p. 123. He states that when main drivers needed replacement they might be replaced with Universal type.
