Nostalgia & History > Santa Fe Slogan SaturdayDate: 12/01/12 03:54 Santa Fe Slogan Saturday Author: santafe199 Santa Fe's Howard District between Emporia & Moline, KS was long abandoned by 1981 but there was still a piece of the branch in place in SE Emporia. For several months there was a string of boxcars stored on that track. I knew there were several of Santa Fe's classic slogans to been seen & photographed, but I kept thinking "I'll come back later". I finally got around to taking a couple of shots one day in October after noticing how the sun was glinting off the sides. Even then I just gave it a quick stab, and hurried away on some other mission. "Oh, they'll always be there, right?" Wrong! I never saw them again.
I should have heeded the slogan in this shot. I should have walked & photographed that string of boxcars: "ALL THE WAY"... 1. Sad scene on the old Howard District track south of NR Jct. in southeastern Emporia, KS on October 17, 1981. Thanks for looking! Lance Garrels santafe199 Edited 1 time(s). I rode the Texas Chief from Temple to Newton and back at least 40 times growing up. My grandparents lived near Claflin, KS.

It seems the Super Chief was the most common; the Chicagoan was the least. "Ship and Travel" was something my family did in the 1960s. Bob |
