Nostalgia & History > few Santa Fe Daggett, CA . . .Date: 12/04/12 15:10 few Santa Fe Daggett, CA . . . Author: 3rdswitch . . Daggett lies ten miles east of Barstow, CA on Santa Fe's Needles District and is the junction of UP's LA and Salt Lake route into Los Angeles from Salt Lake City and the beginning of trackage rights for UP on Santa Fe to Riverside, CA where UP tracks split off for the run into the LA area. It is a very small desert community and was a great place to spend a day watching trains of both roads. I and fellow railfan and TO member ATSF100WEST used to spend many a weekend there. The tiny cafe served a great steak sandwich and a line of trees south of the tracks offered plenty of shade. Last I passed the cafe was no more but the junction is as busy as ever. These shots taken in April '73 on the same day are of two eastbounds and a westbound.

Author: BCHellman When the Johnny Carson show was on the air, during the first segment, his stand-up monologue, and the second segment, sitting and chatting with Ed McMahon, Johnny would occasionally reference Daggett with the phrase -- "Daggett, gateway to Barstow." My half-sister grew up in Texas and regularly watched the show. When her and her husband were out for a visit, we happened to pass through Barstow on the way to Vegas. When she saw the sign approaching Barstow, she perked up and said "so this is Barstow! Where's Daggett?"
World famous Daggett. Date: 12/05/12 04:38 Re: few Santa Fe Daggett, CA . . . Author: coach Look at those trains--these days, it's a big deal to see a manifest train of boxcars, given all the stack traffic. How times have changed...

I never watched Carson growing up - how on earth did he manage to work Daggett into casual banter so he could deploy that catchphrase? Seems like it would be hard enough to find reasons to talk about Barstow on national TV, let alone its eastern suburb. I've only found the name useful as a substitute expletive - a detail part goes flying out of the tweezers and ends up lost in the carpet, "Daggett!" Author: Lone Star Evan, I'm not sure what caused Carson to find/use Daggett the way he did, but he was instrumental in getting the first television service supplied to Essex, CA, another of the supreme garden spots in the Mojave...
