1. This one may not get many votes .... American Bulk Loading Baldwin, LA area on July 7, 1982 by Alan Miler. What was the 'inspiration' for this paint scheme?

Top no clue, leftover paint? Here is another Baldwin in the same area in '76, much better under Koppel Bulk.

Of course I am biased , but the Santa Fe zebra stripe scheme looked good all the Santa Fe 's Baldwins.

Our chapter's Baldwin ain't too bad. It sure stood out in the woods.

Are you saying it took inspiration to paint #1 photo??? My of my favorite Baldwin schemes was Amador Central. If I knew how to post a photo on here, I would - my new scanner, printer is too sophisticated for me!

the inspiration comment was not intended to be serious, as I thought the 'paint scheme' on the American Bulk Loading unit didn't even merit the term 'paint scheme', anyway is this the Amador Central paint scheme you are referring to?

The one I was referring to was solid blue. That must have been an earlier color scheme that I hadn't seen...not too bad though.

The "inspiration" for the bilious purple shade on LS&BC #9 was the railroad's owner and, in later years its only real customer, Carus Chemical Co. in LaSalle, IL. Carus' main product is potassium permanganate (KMnO4), which is used in water treatment among other things. The stuff is this same shade of purple.

It's sister, S8 #8, avoided this embarassment and spent its entire career in a more tasteful black-and-white version of the scheme: LS&BC 8, LaSalle IL, December 1971, photographer unknown.

While #9 was purchased secondhand from the U.S. Navy, #8 was purchased new from Baldwin in 1951 and was reportedly the only S8 built with a cast frame.
